Airport Safety

The crash station located on the Columbus Metropolitan Airport airfield has a staff working 24 hours a day - 7days a week.  They are prepared to handle any emergency that may occur.  All Safety Officers are trained as both public safety and fire safety officers.
Led by Chief Charles E. Lloyd, the Public Safety Department is comprised of one civilian security clerk and 13 certified Georgia Peace Officers who work 24-hour shifts.  The public safety officers are required to maintain their certification in both fire control and law enforcement.  A minimum of 20 hours law enforcement training and a minimum of 120 hours fire fighting training are required annually.  All airport and public safety officers are also required by Georgia state law to be annually tested and re-certified as aircraft rescue fire fighters.
The Public Safety department is equipped with two police patrol units, one quick response unit equipped with water and AFFF foam, and one OshKosh-TA 1500 Aircraft Fire Fighting Truck.  This unit holds 1500 gallons of water, 700 pounds of dry chemical and 195 gallons of AFFF foam.

These dedicated professionals maintain training for two jobs:  law enforcement and fire fighting  to ensure the safety of the airport's patrons and employees.
